Lohja

Lohja is a town in southern Finland, in the Uusimaa region, roughly 50 kilometres west of Helsinki. It stretches along the shores of Lake Lohjanjärvi, one of the largest lakes in southern Finland, providing a pleasant setting for boating, fishing and lakeside walks during the summer months. The historic centre is home to St Lawrence's Church (Pyhän Laurin kirkko), a medieval stone building dating from the 15th century, decorated with old frescoes and regarded as one of the region's most notable religious monuments. The town is also known for its limestone bedrock, long exploited by local industry, particularly at the Tytyri Mine, now partly open to visitors as an underground experience. Lohja is additionally home to a vineyard, one of the few wine-producing estates in Finland, making fruit and berry wines. In winter, the surrounding area offers good conditions for cross-country skiing and ice fishing, while summer highlights the lakeside scenery and nearby nature trails.
