Esens

Esens is a small town in East Frisia, Lower Saxony, recognised as a climatic health resort thanks to its temperate maritime climate shaped by the nearby North Sea. The historic centre retains a distinctly Frisian character, featuring the Sankt-Magnus-Kirche church and the Pulverturm, a remnant of the town's former fortifications. A weekly market regularly brings life to the central square. Esens often serves as a starting point for exploring the coast, particularly the port of Bensersiel a few kilometres away, from where ferries depart for the island of Langeoog. The surrounding countryside, characterised by dykes, polders and Wadden Sea landscapes, is well suited to walking and cycling, both popular pastimes throughout East Frisia. The area also offers beaches and protected nature reserves, valued for birdwatching during migration seasons. Local cuisine highlights seafood as well as traditional East Frisian tea, typically served with cream and rock sugar.
