Colares

Colares is a coastal locality within the municipality of Sintra, on Portugal's Atlantic coast, just a few kilometres west of the historic town of Sintra. The area is known for its distinctive vineyards, where the Ramisco grape variety grows in sandy soils sheltered from the wind, producing Colares wine, one of Portugal's oldest demarcated wine regions. Nearby beaches, including Praia Grande, Praia das Maçãs and Praia da Adraga, attract surfers and those who enjoy clifftop walks. A historic tram line once connected Sintra to Praia das Maçãs via Colares, offering a glimpse into the area's railway heritage. The climate is oceanic, with mild summers that often turn misty by late afternoon, characteristic of this Atlantic-facing coastline. The proximity of Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, makes it a popular stop for visitors. Local restaurants regularly serve fresh fish and seafood.
