Paderne

Paderne is a rural parish within the municipality of Albufeira, set in the inland countryside of the Algarve, Portugal. It is best known for the ruins of its medieval castle, the Castelo de Paderne, a Moorish-era fortress built from sandstone and rammed earth, overlooking the Ribeira de Quarteira valley. Though now in ruins, the site remains open to visitors and offers insight into the region's Islamic and military history prior to the Christian Reconquest. The surrounding landscape is dotted with orange groves, olive trees and almond orchards, characteristic of the Algarve's interior. The atmosphere is calm and unspoilt, far removed from the bustle of the coastal resorts, with quiet country lanes well suited to walking and cycling. Albufeira itself lies around 15 minutes away by car, making it easy to combine the rural charm of Paderne with the beaches and tourist amenities of the coast.
