Portimão

Portimão is a coastal town on Portugal's Algarve coast, well known for Praia da Rocha, a beach lined with ochre cliffs and rock formations typical of the region. The town is built around the mouth of the River Arade and features a modern marina used by pleasure boats and excursions, including trips to the Algarve's coastal caves. The historic centre retains a strong fishing heritage, still visible at the harbour, where grilled sardines remain a local speciality served in many restaurants. The Portimão Museum, housed in a former cannery, traces the town's industrial and maritime history. Portimão enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, characteristic of the Algarve, making it well suited to outdoor pursuits such as golf, water sports, coastal walks and day trips to nearby villages like Ferragudo or Alvor. The town is also a convenient base for visiting Silves, the former Moorish capital known for its hilltop castle, located around twenty kilometres away. Portimão thus combines maritime heritage, local gastronomy and the natural scenery typical of southern Portugal.
