Mascali

Mascali is a small Sicilian town on the Ionian coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, in the province of Catania. Its location makes it an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area: the nearby beach is perfect for a swim before heading off to discover the region, and the restaurant Pizza dello Ionio, right by the seafront, is well regarded for its pizzas. From Mascali, it's easy to reach major tourist towns such as Taormina or Syracuse, though it's worth planning train or bus connections in advance, as timetables can require a bit of forethought. Climbing Mount Etna, Sicily's iconic active volcano, is a memorable experience despite the physical effort involved, rewarding visitors with striking views over the island's eastern coastline. The nearby Alcantara Gorges are ideal for canyoning, set within a dramatic natural landscape of volcanic basalt formations.
