Marsala

Marsala, on Sicily's western coast, is a port town known for its sweet fortified wine and its Phoenician and Punic heritage. The surrounding landscape is defined by the salt pans stretching along the coast towards Trapani, dotted with traditional windmills once used for salt extraction: a must-see spot for understanding the region's historical economy and enjoying renowned sunsets over the salt flats. Marsala's historic centre, with its cobbled streets and Baroque buildings, is worth a leisurely wander, as is the seafront overlooking the Egadi Islands. The town also makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area: Trapani, about thirty minutes away, has its own historic quarter and lively harbour, while Erice, perched high on its promontory, charms visitors with its medieval lanes and sweeping views. For a meal, the restaurant Assud is worth considering locally. Marsala thus lends itself well to a stay combining heritage, local gastronomy and excursions across western Sicily.
