Pazin

Pazin is a small town in the heart of Istria, Croatia, set away from the busier coastal areas. It is best known for its medieval castle, the Kaštel, which overlooks a striking karst chasm carved out by the Pazinčica River. This natural pit, known as the Pazin Abyss, is said to have inspired Jules Verne in one of his novels and remains the town's principal natural landmark. The castle now houses an ethnographic museum documenting the history and traditions of the Istrian region. Pazin often serves as a starting point for exploring inland Istria, a rural area dotted with vineyards, olive groves and hilltop villages such as Motovun and Grožnjan. Local cuisine showcases typical produce from the Istrian countryside, particularly the white truffles harvested in nearby forests, alongside artisan cheeses and cured meats. The temperate continental climate of this part of Istria differs from that of the coast, with warm summers and cooler winters. Pazin therefore offers an authentic experience away from the tourist bustle of the neighbouring seaside resorts.
