Buje

Buje is a small hilltop town in western Istria, Croatia, often referred to as the 'watchtower of Istria' owing to its elevated position, which offers sweeping views over the Mirna river valley and, on clear days, out towards the Adriatic Sea. Its historic centre retains a distinct Venetian character, with cobbled lanes, stone houses and remnants of old fortifications reflecting its past as a defensive settlement. The surrounding countryside forms part of the Istrian terroir renowned for wine and olive oil production, industries that still shape much of the local economy and the rural landscape of vineyards and olive groves. Buje lies close to other well-known inland Istrian towns, including Grožnjan, associated with resident artists, and Motovun, famous for its truffles. The Adriatic coast, with towns such as Umag and Novigrad, is around twenty minutes away by car, making it easy to combine a countryside stay with days by the sea. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate tempered by continental influences from the interior, giving it mild conditions throughout much of the year.
