Vela Luka Korčula

Vela Luka is a coastal town at the western tip of the island of Korčula, in Croatia, set at the head of a long, sheltered bay ringed by wooded hills. It is the island's largest settlement, with an economy traditionally based on fishing and olive growing, alongside more recent tourism development. The Vela Spila cave, a prehistoric archaeological site overlooking the town, points to human occupation dating back several millennia and is of interest to visitors curious about the region's history. The surrounding coastline offers numerous coves and pebble beaches suitable for swimming, along with opportunities for walking in the hinterland. Vela Luka enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Its harbour provides regular ferry connections to Split, making it easily accessible from the mainland. The historic town of Korčula, known for its fortified old centre and Venetian-influenced architecture, lies at the opposite end of the island, roughly an hour's drive away. Vela Luka remains a convenient base for exploring the island's natural scenery and sampling local produce, particularly olive oil and wine.
