Ajaccio

Ajaccio, capital of Corse-du-Sud and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, sits at the head of a gulf framed by hills and Corsican scrubland. The historic centre, built around the citadel and the old town's narrow streets, leads to Ajaccio's market, where local produce, cured meats, cheeses and regional fruit can be found. The seafront looks out over the gulf and, further out, towards the Îles Sanguinaires, easily reached on a boat trip or an evening walk. From the city, several routes lead to the calanques de Piana, known for their red rock formations plunging into the sea, as well as to Porticcio, a seaside resort across the gulf popular for its beaches.
