St-Leu

St-Leu lies on the west coast of Réunion Island, in an area known for its dry, sunny climate sheltered from the trade winds. The town is internationally recognised among surfers for its left-hand wave, considered one of the finest breaks in the Indian Ocean. The lagoon and coral reef provide good conditions for diving and snorkelling, while the season from July to October draws visitors keen to spot humpback whales offshore. The Stella Matutina museum, housed in a former sugar factory, traces the history of sugar cane cultivation and the island's geological formation. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette chapel, perched on the hillside, is a local pilgrimage site offering views over the coastline. St-Leu is also home to a small vineyard, an unusual feature for a tropical location. The fishing harbour and local market add to the everyday life of the town. The area serves as a convenient base for exploring the island's mountainous cirques and wilder southern coast, combining beaches with hiking trails.
