L'Île-aux-Moines

L'Île-aux-Moines, often called the 'pearl of the Gulf of Morbihan', is best explored on foot or by bicycle, as car traffic is very limited. A full circuit of the island covers roughly 20 kilometres, taking in the village centre, the harbour and the coastal paths that offer ever-changing views over the gulf. The island's headlands, particularly those facing the open water, are especially popular for their panoramas and the distinctive sea air of this sheltered stretch of water, dotted with small islands and oyster beds. The village, with its flower-lined lanes and traditional houses, is home to most of the island's shops and services. For dining, Chez Charlemagne serves stone-grilled dishes, meat and fresh fish alongside home-made chips, while La Girouette is another well-regarded spot on the island. Reachable only by boat from Port-Blanc or Vannes, L'Île-aux-Moines retains a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for leisurely walks amid unspoilt nature and small maritime heritage sites. The mild oceanic climate and the gulf's particular light make it a favoured destination for walking and discovering the Breton coastline.
