La Mongie

La Mongie is a ski resort in the Hautes-Pyrénées, close to the Col du Tourmalet, sitting at around 1,800 metres above sea level. It forms part of the Grand Tourmalet ski area, one of the largest in the Pyrenees, offering alpine skiing, cross-country trails and dedicated snowboarding zones. The resort also serves as a starting point for the cable car up to the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, home to an astronomical observatory and sweeping views over the Pyrenean range. In summer, La Mongie becomes a popular stop for cyclists tackling the Col du Tourmalet, a legendary Tour de France climb, as well as for walkers exploring the surrounding mountain paths. The resort's architecture, typical of 1960s-70s ski developments, is centred around shops, residences and a handful of dining options, including the restaurant Le Schull, well regarded for its atmosphere and food. Administratively part of the town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, La Mongie benefits from generally reliable snow cover in winter thanks to its altitude, and an unspoilt natural setting suited to outdoor activities all year round.
