Lege-Cap Ferret

Lège-Cap Ferret sits on the sandy peninsula that closes off the Arcachon Bay in the Gironde department. The area brings together several distinctive villages, including L'Herbe, Le Canon, Piraillan and Grand Piquey, known for their colourful oyster huts and the famous stilt cabins (cabanes tchanquées) perched over the water. Oyster farming remains a defining local activity, with tastings widely available directly from producers. The 19th-century Cap Ferret lighthouse offers views over both the bay and the ocean. The peninsula has two contrasting sides: calm, family-friendly beaches facing the bay, and wilder ocean-facing beaches known for stronger waves and currents. Extensive maritime pine forests cover much of the land, ideal for cycling. A boat crossing links Cap Ferret to the town of Arcachon on the opposite shore. A popular spot for second homes, Lège-Cap Ferret is valued for its unspoilt natural surroundings, understated coastal atmosphere, and proximity to the Dune du Pilat, reachable by crossing the bay.
