Uzes

Uzès, in the Gard department, is a small town with a distinctly Provençal character, built around its ducal palace, one of the oldest in France, whose Renaissance façade still dominates the historic centre. The Place aux Herbes, lined with arcades and plane trees, hosts a traditional market known for regional produce, particularly truffles and local wines. The Tour Fenestrelle, a Romanesque remnant, and the cobbled lanes of the old town reflect a rich architectural heritage. Uzès lies around twenty kilometres from the Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a convenient base for exploring the wider region. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, encourages outdoor activities such as walking in the surrounding garrigue scrubland or swimming in the Gardon gorges. Quieter than nearby Nîmes or Avignon, the town is valued for its authentic atmosphere and well-preserved heritage, away from the busiest tourist routes.
