Bessans

Bessans is a village in the Haute-Maurienne valley in Savoie, sitting at around 1,700 metres altitude on the edge of the Vanoise National Park. The commune is known for its woodcarving tradition, exemplified by the carved devil figures on display at St Anthony's chapel and in several workshops around the village. Traditional Savoyard architecture, with its timber-and-stone farmhouses, characterises both the village and the neighbouring hamlet of L'Écot, one of the highest inhabited villages in France. Bessans is also noted for its locally grown saffron, cultivated using traditional methods. In winter, the resort offers an extensive cross-country skiing network, among the largest in the French Alps, alongside modest, family-friendly alpine ski slopes. In summer, the village serves as a starting point for walks into the Vanoise massif and surrounding mountain passes. The alpine setting, quiet atmosphere and proximity to the Italian border make it a popular choice for nature-focused stays combining outdoor activities with a taste of local heritage.
